Say One For Me (1959)

Ok, I'm convinced the only role Bing Crosby can play is a priest. I've never liked him as an actor (love him as a singer), but he does alright with the crap he was given here. A lot of things bug me about this movie. Debbie Reynolds (is the only reason I watched this) plays a goodie goodie church going young lady who is trying to earn money for her sick father. She takes a job working for a man who has no redeemable qualities...but still she's attracted to him? Robert Wagner plays the scum bucket she falls for, and he really is a rat (until the last 10 minutes of the film). Not only does he play a jackass, but the acting & dialogue suck donkey dick. So whenever he appears onscreen you instinctively pick up the remote & want to change channels.

I read an interesting fact on IMDB:

"One of the films included in "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time (and how they got that way)" by Harry Medved and Randy Lowell."
I can understand how this movie made their list...although I'm sure I've watched 50 worse films. I'll embed a couple clips of Debbie below...but save yourself the pain of watching the entire movie. Oh, and I saw Joe Besser in the movie. He ruined the 3 Stooges...so having him attached to another bad product isn't shocking.

  1. If you want to see Bing acting, watch 'The Country Girl'.

He didn't do so badly either in 'High Society' and a few others. For fifteen years Bing was among the top ten box office stars and for five consecutive years (1944–1949) he achieved the number one spot. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1944 for his portrayal of Father Chuck O’Malley in 'Going My Way'. He was also nominated for two additional Best Actor Awards for his performances in The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945) and The Country Girl (1954).

  2. I've seen "High Society" & "Going My Way"...I'm just not a fan of his acting. Can't argue about how big a star he was & the awards he earned...I just don't like his performances from what I've seen.

  3. The sad thing about this movie is that Debbie Reynolds does some great dancing in it and it's hard to sit through the rest of the film to get to it.

  4. I'll agree Debbie is the highlight of the film, but there's not much dancing even in the musical numbers. What there is happens to be extremely simple. Of course I just finished watching "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers"...so I went from this crap movie to one with a lot of very athletic dancing.
